A NATIONAL day of remembrance for patients who have died from MRSA and other hospital-acquired “superbugs” will take place today.

A multi-denominational service is being held in Cork tonight for the families and carers of those who have died from hospital-acquired diseases and for those currently suffering from such infections.

Latest figures show there were 191 reported cases of MRSA in Irish hospitals in the first six months of 2009.

The figures, released by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre, indicate a continuing fall in the number of reported cases of MRSA in hospitals here in recent years – down from 575 in 2006 to 419 in 2008.
