Measures to tackle the State's litter problem will be announced shortly, the Minister of State for the Environment has said. Mr Dan Wallace said he was concerned about the continuing widespread litter pollution and wanted to see local authorities use the new powers under the Litter Pollution Act 1997.

He is to meet local authority management to stress the importance of greater enforcement of the laws and the need to underline civic and environmental responsibilities.
