THE Northern Secretary, Sir Patrick Mayhew, has warned that the loyalist parties cannot be involved in next week's talks if the Mitchell principles on democracy and non-violence are breached, writes Gerry Moriarty.

As the death threat by the Combined Loyalist Military Command (CLMC) remains in force against two dissident loyalists, Mr Billy Wright and Mr Alex Kerr, Sir Patrick made it clear yesterday that the fringe loyalist parties must adhere to the six Mitchell principles.

He said that "the talks process will continue with or without those on the political extremes."

The talks are due to resume on Monday. The DUP has urged that the Ulster Democratic Party and the Progressive Unionist Party, which reflect the CLMC viewpoint, be excluded because of the death threats.
