At 11.45p.m. on Wednesday night Northern Secretary Peter Mandelson rose from the dinner table at Glencairn, the British embassy residence in Sandyford, Co Dublin. He announced to the select group of guests, "Well, I am off to bed now, I am going to be stripped of my powers at midnight and I would like to be alone."
