A man facing over 50 counts of fraud against banks in the US involving millions of dollars appeared in court yesterday on an extradition warrant.

Mr Albert Oldridge (73), of Caheragh, Drimoleague, Co Cork, also known as J. Latter, appeared in Dublin District Court after a warrant was issued by authorities in Detroit, Michigan.

He is accused of wire fraud, mail fraud and defrauding Swiss Cantobank, National Bank of Michigan and Mannistee Security Bank, involving transactions of between $3.5 million and $15 million.

Det Sgt Martin O'Neill said he had met the defendant by appointment outside the court that morning. He had given no reply when asked if he knew what the warrant was about.

Judge Murrough Connellan remanded the defendant in custody to Mountjoy Prison pending a High Court bail application. He is due to appear again next Tuesday.
