A 45-year-old man was killed in a house fire in Galway at the weekend.

A 45-year-old man was killed in a house fire in Galway at the weekend.

The fatal fire happened in the early hours of Saturday morning at the man’s home at Gilnockie, Lenereevagh, Barna.

Gardaí and the emergency services were called out to the house at 2am.

A 71-year-old woman, who was also in the house when the fire broke out was taken for treatment to University College Hospital Galway.

It is understood she is suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

They were the only two people in the house when the fire started.

Gardaí at Salthill are investigating the incident to determine the cause of the fire.
