Gardai arrested a man in Clones, Co Monaghan, early yesterday following an incident in the town in which a young man was shot in the thigh.
The incident began at 12.30 a.m. when a man with a rifle had been seen in the centre of the town. Gardai received a report that a man had been shot near the Diamond. The victim did not suffer life-threatening injuries.
Later gardai arrested a man and seized a legally held .22 rifle. He was being questioned under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
A Garda spokesman said the incident did not appear to involve paramilitaries.
