Meanwhile, two people were being held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act in London last night.

Police refused to comment on speculation that the arrests were linked to letters recovered from the body found in the blast wreckage.

In the House of Commons, the Northern Ireland Secretary, Sir Patrick Mayhew, condemned the London bombs as "disgusting in their immoral character and horrifying in their scale".

His comments came during a third reading debate on the Northern Ireland (Emergency Provisions) Act, which renews and amends anti terrorism measures.

The 111A yesterday admitted responsibility for the blast in which seven other people were injured.
