Live register falls as 375 jobs lost in Dublin

The Tánaiste today said news that electronics manufacturer Selectron is to close in Clonshaugh with the loss of 375 jobs was a "dreadful blow to the workforce, their families and to North Dublin generally".

> The news of the closure came as it live register figures published today showed a fall of just over 6,000 in April.

The seasonally adjusted live register is now 159,000 almost 20,000 more than the same period last year. This means the unemployment rate now stands at 4.2%.

Announcing the closure, Solectron said it is moving its operations to a number of locations overseas. The company makes components under licence for some of the world's largest electronics companies,

Ms Harney said the news is a major disappointment, particularly as North Dublin has been badly hit by other job losses in recent times. She said arrangements have been made to find alternative employment for all those involved.

She said there are already a number of potential investors looking at locations in North Dublin that have lost jobs recently following the closure of the Gateway plant and the scaling down of Motorola’s operations.

"I am confident that there will be better news for the area before too much longer." Ms Harney said.
