KILKENNY’S TREASURED Liber Primus contains the first written customs, practices and bylaws for Kilkenny.
The book, dating from 1231, forms part of an exhibition of the city’s archive which opened this week to celebrate the 400th anniversary of city status. It is written on vellum pages and is made from dried calf and goatskin.
Kilkenny town clerk Brian Tyrrell carefully leafs through the 13th century artefact.
Meanwhile, President Mary McAleese is to be granted the freedom of the city. Members of the borough council voted to bestow the honour on her when she visits next month.
Mayor of Kilkenny Pat Crotty said: “A special meeting of the borough council will be convened at Kilkenny Castle on May 19th to welcome and honour the President with the freedom of Kilkenny city.”
