Moscow - Sailors trapped in the rear compartment of Russia's Kursk submarine, which plunged to the bottom of the Barents Sea a year ago killing all 118 men on board, died a quick death from asphyxiation, a military lawyer said yesterday.

"The sailors in the ninth compartment died very quickly because of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by an explosion or fire," Gen Viktor Sheyen said.
