WASHINGTON - Major US Jewish organisations yesterday hailed a US report on the fate of Nazi assets, saying it vindicated their campaign for Switzerland to make restitution to Holocaust survivors.

The report found that a "small portion" of the gold that Nazis deposited in Swiss and Italian banks came from the jewellery, dental fillings and Jewish memorabilia of Holocaust victims.

It also recommended a significant amount of gold transferred by Switzerland to the allies after the war be given to death camp survivors.

The New York based World Jewish Congress (WJC) - whose self defined mission is to protect the interest of Jews worldwide - called the report a "moral milestone" that justifies survivors' demands for restitution.
