A Japanese woman (58) has told police the remains of six babies found in an apartment closet over the weekend were hers.
Police were reported as saying the woman had probably kept the remains elsewhere and had moved them to the apartment when she moved there a year ago.
The reports said the woman was being questioned about the timing and circumstances surrounding the babies' deaths. Five sets of remains were in a plastic bag and the other was in a plastic box.
The remains were discovered on the top shelf of a closet when cleaners were tidying the ground floor rental apartment after the woman and her son left it at the end of March.
The woman told police the most recent of the remains was that of a baby delivered more than 10 years ago, the reports said.
