Israel's national rescue service says an Israeli youth has been killed and a second wounded by a Palestinian attacker in a West Bank settlement.

Spokesman Eli Bin says the attacker, who was armed with an axe, entered the Bat Ayin settlement south of Jerusalem.

Rescuers on the scene told Israel Radio that a 13-year-old boy was killed and a 7-year-old boy was badly wounded. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The attack is likely to heighten tensions between the Palestinians and the new hard-line Israeli government.
