A garda who received rib and wrist injuries while escorting a prisoner in Shankill Garda station in Co Dublin was awarded £43,000 damages at the High Court yesterday.

Garda Patricia Lynch (36), now stationed in Trim, Co Meath, said that in Shankill station on February 17th, 1994, the prisoner had jammed her left hand up against a door frame and pushed against her with his body.

She was subsequently diagnosed as suffering from a rib injury. Unable to do formal police work, she became a Community Police Officer. She was unable to play badminton or to carry out normal household duties, as bending down caused severe pain in her right side. She was off work for two months as a result of the incident.

Mr Justice Kinlen assessed total compensation at £43,000.
