Search begins for new Bosnian PM

SARAJEVO -Bosnia's three-man presidency formally accepted the resignation of prime minister Nikola Spiric yesterday, signalling the start of difficult talks on a new cabinet and possible early elections in the divided country.

Mr Spiric will remain caretaker PM while the country's three rival ethnic groups - Bosnian Serbs, Croats and Muslims - try to find a compromise candidate for prime minister. If they cannot agree, the country must hold a general election. - (Reuters)

Congolese militia leader to face trial

AMSTERDAM -Congolese militia leader Thomas Lubanga, accused of using child soldiers in his country's 1998-2003 war, will face trial in March 2008, the first person to be tried by the International Criminal Court.

Mr Lubanga (46), who founded and led a militia in the Democratic Republic of Congo's Ituri district, was arrested last year and accused of enlisting and conscripting children under the age of 15 to kill members of the Lendu ethnic group. -(Reuters)

Pope to address United Nations

WASHINGTON -Pope Benedict's first visit to the US next April will include stops in Washington and New York over six days, the US Catholic bishops said yesterday.

During the trip, from April 15th-20th, 2008, the Pope will address the United Nations in New York at the invitation of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and meet with the bishops at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, the announcement said. -(Reuters)

BANJUL -Twenty African migrants were feared dead after the boat in which they were trying to reach Spain capsized in bad weather off the coast of Gambia at the weekend, Gambian state television said yesterday. - (Guardian service)

Omega-3 may cut Alzheimer's risk

LONDON -Eating a diet rich in omega-3 oils such as rapeseed, flaxseed and walnut oil could reduce the risk of suffering Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia by 60 per cent, according to a study of more than 8,000 people.

The study, published in the Journal of Neurology, also found that eating fruit and vegetables daily and fish at least once a week seems to protect against cognitive decline. - (Guardian service)
