Cannabis recovered from sea

A search operation involving gardaí, Revenue's Customs & Excise Service and the Naval Service was due to resume off the west coast this morning after a quantity of what is believed to be cannabis was recovered from the sea by a fishing trawler yesterday.

Seven bales totalling over 100kgs were landed at Galway docks last night after they became entangled in the nets of the Progress II trawler as it was fishing some 60 miles west of Slyne Head.

Customs officers took possession of the drugs last night and the Navy's LE Emer was expected at the scene for further searches early this morning.

The trawler that found the drugs continued a search in the area after the initial find and was later joined by a customs cutter vessel.

Man (90) dies in Carlow crash

A 90-year-old man was killed in a road traffic crash in Co Carlow. David Bambrick died after his motorbike collided with a parked SUV at Closutton, Leighlinbridge.

He had been on his way to attend Mass in Bagenalstown when the incident occurred at 9.25am.

He was brought to St. Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny but he died shortly afterwards.

Inquest on shot man adjourned

Four people have been detained in relation to the shooting dead of a man at Dublin's Oriel Street in a gangland style killing, an inquest heard yesterday.

Stephen Ledden (28) was shot in the head at Oriel Street, Dublin on December 27th. He was shot by mistake by killers targeting another man thought to be behind a feud-related murder two weeks earlier.

The Dublin city coroner, Dr Brian Farrell granted Insp Fergus Dwyer an adjournment of the inquest into Mr Ledden's death as investigations are ongoing and a file is expected to be sent to the DPP.

Estonian man's inquest adjourned

Further arrests are being considered in relation to the death of a young Estonian man who was pulled from his parked car and beaten to death, an inquest heard yesterday.

Valeri Ranert (28) died at Dublin's Beaumont Hospital from injuries sustained when he was pulled from his car by a number of youths and assaulted in the early hours of April 30th.

The young man was sitting in his car which his girlfriend, which was parked in a lay-by on Forest Road near the airport, at the time of the incident.

She escaped uninjured and the burnt-out car was subsequently recovered at a nearby Travellers' campsite.

The Dublin city coroner, Dr Brian Farrell granted Det Insp Walter O'Sullivan an adjournment of the inquest into Mr Ranert's death under Section 25.1 of the Coroner's Act as a report is currently being compiled for the DPP and criminal charges and further arrests are being considered. Three individuals were arrested following the incident.

€250,000 cannabis seizure in Cork

Customs officers at Cork airport yesterday seized herbal cannabis worth an estimated €250,000. A total of 21kg of the drug was seized shortly after lunchtime yesterday when officers searched the luggage of a 43-year-old South African passenger who had arrived on a flight from Johannesburg via Heathrow.
