Father of Steve Staunton dies
The death took place on Saturday after a long illness of Tom Staunton, father of the Republic of Ireland football manager Steve Staunton.
In a joint statement, Football Association of Ireland president Dave Blood and chief executive John Delaney said Mr Staunton had instilled in his family a genuine love of sport and had given Steve impressive support as a manager and a player.
Mr Staunton is survived by his wife, Rosaleen, four sons and a daughter. Today's scheduled meeting of the FAI board of management has been cancelled.
Arson attack on Limerick home
A Limerick family escaped injury early yesterday when their house was destroyed in an arson attack. Gardaí believe petrol was poured through the letterbox of the house on O'Callaghan Avenue, Kileely, before it was set alight at 1.50am. At least one adult and a number of children were in the house at the time.
Witnesses reported seeing a number of youths running from the house shortly before 2am yesterday.
Medical personnel treated some members of the family at the scene but they did not require further hospital attention.
Assault on former soccer international
Former Ireland soccer international Miah Dennehy remained in a critical but stable condition at Cork University Hospital yesterday following a serious assault in the city on Friday night.
Mr Dennehy, who is in his 50s, played with Cork Hibernians in the 1970s before moving to Nottingham Forest.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the assault which occurred outside the Fob and Gill pub in Mayfield on the north side of Cork city at 7.30pm last Friday.
Funeral of man drowned in Alaska
The funeral will take place in Limerick today of a 38-year-old accountant who died in a tragic accident while trekking in Alaska.
Larry Dowling, originally from Caherdavin in Limerick, had been living in San Francisco. Mr Dowling died on August 7th last following a drowning accident. His funeral will take place today following Mass at 11.30am at Christ the King Church in Caherdavin.
