Insurgents kill eight US troops in Afghanistan
ASADABAD – Insurgents stormed remote Afghan outposts near the Pakistani border, killing eight US troops and cutting off scores of Afghan police, officials said yesterday, in the deadliest battle in more than a year.
Nato said at least two Afghan soldiers died along with the eight Americans. Afghan provincial authorities said they had lost contact with scores of Afghan policemen after the day-long attack and did not know whether they were dead or alive.
The fighting took place in Nuristan province’s Kamdesh district in high mountains along the eastern border with Pakistan on Saturday but was not reported until yesterday. – (Reuters)
Netanyahu gets medical tests
JERUSALEM – Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu underwent medical tests yesterday and was expected to resume normal routine later in the day, his office said.
Mr Netanyahu (59) was put under “mild anaesthesia for a short time” for a colonoscopy of the lower intestinal tract and a cystoscopy of the bladder at the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, the statement said. It said the examinations were follow-up procedures after the removal of a benign intestinal polyp a year ago and the results of yesterday’s tests were normal”. – (Reuters)
