BUCHAREST - President Ion Iliescu holds a slender lead going into tomorrow's Romanian general election, about four points ahead of his nearest rival, Mr Emil Constantinescu, according to most opinion polls. A run-off round later this month is virtually certain.
But voters, weary of widespread poverty and corruption, appear ready to take control of the government away from Mr Iliescu's Party of Social Democracy (PDSR), which lies second ill polls for parliamentary elections also being held tomorrow.
