Labour's presidential candidate Michael D Higgins has refused to be drawn on a claim by Independent candidate Dana Rosemary Scallon that he supported the right to abortion.

Ms Scallon made her remarks in an interview with Pat Kenny on RTÉ Radio today.

Responding to questions about signing a bill as president on issues such as same-sex marriage, Ms Scallon said Mr Higgins was "someone who is pro-abortion rights''.

Campaigning later in Dublin city centre, Mr Higgins said he had not heard the interview.

"Dana and I have differed on many things over the past and that is history,'' he said.

Independent candidate Senator David Norris, who was also campaigning in Dublin city centre today, repeated that he would not be making negative comments about other candidates. "I will hold to it for the next two-and-a-half weeks,'' he added.
