A gunman shot dead at least seven people, apparently at random, in a Serbian village yesterday and police mounted a manhunt to apprehend the killer, police sources said.

They said the gunman, armed with a rifle, was believed to be a local teacher in the village of Jabukovac near the town of Negotin, which is close to Serbia's eastern border with Romania.

There was no immediate information about the victims.

Local agencies said there were reports of up to nine dead and several wounded.

One police source said the man had tried to kill himself the previous day but had been prevented. There was no immediate confirmation of those details.

The reports said special police anti-terrorist units were conducting the manhunt, using two helicopters but so far no arrest had been made.
