A man who raised his arms and shouted "I did not kill Gerry McCabe" to Judge John Neilan in the Limerick District Court yesterday was later taken to St John's Hospital after cutting his wrist. Mr Brian Fahy (21) of Silvermines, Co Tipperary, was appearing on an alleged firearms charge and had been remanded in custody to Nenagh Court next week.

He was taken from the court to a holding cell where he wrenched a piece of metal from the ceiling and cut one of his wrists. Gardai rushed from the court and held him before lie was taken to hospital. He was discharged later and transferred to Limerick jail.

The gardai later indicated that Mr Fahy was not being held in connection with the killing of Garda McCabe.
