The depression support group Aware has begun a nationwide campaign this morning.
Initiatives during Depression Awareness Week Nationwide (DAWN) include a new Lo-Call Helpline and the release of copies of Aware's information packs on CD and cassette to help those suffering from depression.
An estimated 300,000, or 7 per cent of the Irish population, suffer from some degree of depression.
Aware says the quadrupling of the suicide rates among young males in the 15-to-24 age group over the past four years highlights the need for further education on the illness.
