Graduates swell the Garda to record high

Over 100 new gardaí graduated from the Garda College in Templemore today.

Ms Mary Wallace, Minister of State at the Department of Justice, welcomed the 119 new members into the force and congratulated them on completing a "rigorous but rewarding course".

She also commended the Templemore staff for the high standard of Garda training and assured them that the Government was committed to providing the Garda with the resources needed to tackle crime.

"During the Minister’s term of office the size of the force has increased from 10,800 to a current level of approximately 11,640 - an increase of over 800 and a record high," she said.

"We are well on our way to meeting the Government’s commitment of 12,000 personnel by the year 2002," she added.
