Madrid - The Spanish Foreign Minister, Mr Abel Matutes, yesterday said the British rule of Gibraltar, the last existing colony in Europe, was out of date, calling it "an anachronism" and "a disgrace".

Meanwhile, Gibraltar's Prime Minister, Mr Peter Caruana, and Spanish fishermen yesterday reached an agreement in principle to settle a bitter fishing dispute in the waters around the British colony, spokesmen for the fishermen said.

The agreement followed more than seven hours of talks and should be ratified tomorrow after consultations both sides have to hold before the final green light, said Mr Miguel Alberto Diaz of the Spanish Workers Commission union.
