London - Germany caused anger among Britain's farmers last night by announcing it would not lift the ban on British beef, in defiance of a ruling from the European Commission.

The German health minister, Ms Andrea Fischer, said the domestic ban would stay in place because the country feared European regulations allowing meat exports back on sale were not strict enough. But the move sparked anger among politicians and farmers, who had hoped British beef would at last be returning to dinner tables on the Continent.
