Rome - Mystery surrounds the fate of Carabinieri Gen Francesco Delfino (62). One of Italy's foremost policeman, he was yesterday described as in a stable condition after allegedly attempting to commit suicide on Wednesday night, writes Paddy Agnew.
He has been held in a Brescia prison since his arrest on April 14th, on charges relating to kidnapping and extortion. The general's arrest sent shock waves through the Carabinieri, Italy's elite police force. In a distinguished career, he was the mastermind behind arrests of leading Red Brigade figures, including Renato Curcio, in the late 1970s.
