The owners of a Galway pub who openly defied the smoking ban last July have been fined a total of €9,400 at Galway District Court today.

íRonan Lawless and Kieran Levanzin of Fibber Magees pub in Eyre Square, Galway City, admitted to smoking on the premises and were fined €6,400, plus €3,000 in costs.

Mr Lawless and Mr Levanzin, along with their company, Cliplaw Ltd, faced a total of 11 summons under the Public Health Act of 2004, after conducting television interviews over two days in July, in which they flouted the smoking ban and permitted their customers to do so too.

Mr Levanzin was fined a total of €3,000, while Mr Lawless faced a personal fine of €4,000 after he contested the fact that he was occupier of the building on July 6th.

The company was fined a total of €2,000 and both men were fines an additional €200 each, for smoking on the premises themselves.
