There were tearful scenes in Aghada in east Cork yesterday as local people comforted the parents of two sisters killed in a horrific car accident at the weekend.
Fiona (25) and Marie Higgins (23), from Greenpark, Upper Aghada, died when their Ford Fiesta crashed through the barriers of a flyover on the Midleton bypass on Saturday.
The sisters were the only children of Liam and Ann Higgins and yesterday hundreds of people joined the couple at the funeral Mass in the Church of St Erasmus in Aghada.
The local curate, Father Pat Scanlan, said that the tragic death of the sisters had triggered the memories of many people who had lost loved ones.
Father Scanlan asked mourners to pray also for the victims of a second crash in Cork city which claimed the lives of James Lyons (32), a father of three, and Paul O'Connell (32). The two friends died when their car collided with a rampart on the Southern Link Road in Cork city on Monday morning. Two women injured in the crash - both in their twenties - remained in a critical condition in Cork University Hospital yesterday.
