A fight between rival drug gangs in a maximum security prison north of Rio has killed four inmates.

Imprisoned Brazilian drug lord Luiz Fernando da Costa is suspected of having led the riot.

A standoff between inmates and guards is ongoing. Two hostages from a group of four guards and four other prison employees, seized at the Bangu I prison in the west of the state, were released last night.

Governor of Rio de Janeiro state Mr Benedita da Silva ordered forces to occupy the jail, and authorities are trying to negotiate a surrender by the mutineers.
