Former bishop of Tuam dies

The former bishop of Tuam, the Right Rev John (Jack) Coote Duggan, has died, aged 82.

The former bishop of Tuam, the Right Rev John (Jack) Coote Duggan, has died, aged 82.

He was elected bishop of Tuam in 1969 and retired in 1985. He continued to be active and earlier this year was appointed assistant bishop of Europe in recognition of his contribution to the Spanish Episcopal Church.

Educated in High School, Dublin, and TCD, he was ordained a deacon in 1941 and a priest the following year. He served as a curate in two parishes: St Luke's, Cork, for two years and five years in Taney Parish, Dublin.

In 1948 he became rector of Portarlington, where he served for seven years followed by 14 years as rector of Glenageary Parish, Co Dublin. In 1969 he became rector of Westport and Achill Union and Archdeacon of Tuam.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, and two children, Brian and Sheila. In a tribute yesterday the Archbishop of Armagh, Dr Robin Eames, said the Church of Ireland would long remember with gratitude the episcopal ministry of Bishop Duggan in the west.
