Countries outside the EU rushed to toughen their border controls tonight after the confirmation that the disease has reached France.

Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic and Norway all announced new measures in an attempt to keep their country clear of the livestock disease which is ravaging Britain.

The Swiss federal veterinary office said it was banning the entry of all cows, pigs, sheep, goats and deer into Switzerland from European Union countries.

Czech authorities extended an import ban on cloven-hoofed animals - such as sheep, pigs and cows - from Britain to cover the whole of the European Union and Poland.

As a further precaution, authorities also installed disinfectant-soaked "anti-epidemic" rugs at the country's four international airports.

Poland's chief vet banned the transit of French animals and animal products.
