Five people have been killed and 15 others were injured in a grenade explosion at a village in the southern Philippines.

The grenade went off yesterday evening near the town of Barobo on Mindanao island, a military spokesman said.

The authorities are trying to determine who was responsible, he said. Communist rebels are known to operate in the region.
