Fishery re-closes after complaints

A Cork fishery which reopened last week has closed again, following complaints from local farmers and other fisheries.

The Careysville fishery, part of Lismore Estates outside Fermoy, closed when the Department of the Marine imposed its ban on angling as a foot-and-mouth precaution.

That ban has been lifted and a series of guidelines introduced for the angling sector. These ask anglers to refrain from fishing in areas which involved crossing farmland which may have held cattle, sheep, pigs, goats or deer since February 1st.

Anglers at Careysville did not have to cross land which held susceptible animals, said Mr Hal Chavasse, spokesman for the estate.

The fishery reopened because of this, but closed within days "in the interests of good neighbourliness". He emphasised that there was no risk, but said farmers were concerned.
