A fire which broke out this morning on a ship in the English Channel has been brought under control

A fire which broke out this morning on a ship in the English Channel has been brought under control. Their were 13 people on board including an Irish person, 11 British people and a Portuguese.

The car carrier, with 329 vehicles on board, was sailing from Southampton to Zeebrugge in Belgium when the fire broke out 11 miles north of Calais in France.

The crew tried to extinguish the engine-room blaze themselves. Fire broke out on the Norwegian-registered Autofreighterat 4.30 a.m.

A British tug was sent to the area to help the crew fight the fire.
