Fire at Roscommon Glanbia plant threatens jobs

A massive fire which has caused extensive damage at the Glanbia meat factory in Rooskey, County Roscommon is threatening up to 450 jobs.

Firefighters from Roscommon, Leitrim and Longford are still trying to bring the fire under control. The blaze started at around 2.30 p.m. this afternoon.

The fire started in the boning and chill area and a company spokesman told ireland.comthat any fire damage in an area like that could be regarded as "extensive". The spokesman also said that the company was thankful that the evacuation went smoothly and that there were no casualties whatsoever.

The company would not speculate at this early stage about what effect the fire would have on job losses, but, said that its main priorities were to get the blaze under control and to evaluate what damage had been done to the plant and to see what efforts are needed to bring it back to full operation.

Glanbia has two other plants, both of which have spare capacity and the company will use that capacity in its contingency plans.

The spokesman added that Glanbia is fully insured and is covered for consequential loss.
