United States: Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton fainted yesterday during a speech at a private club in Buffalo, New York, but recovered after treatment for a stomach virus.

The former First Lady began a speech about social security, but had to sit down before finishing it, according to people at the meeting. She then passed out and was treated by a doctor before recovering.

Mrs Clinton (57) was smiling when she walked out of the club and later arrived at a Catholic college, where she was to speak about health care.

Dozens of anti-abortion protesters were waiting to protest against Mrs Clinton, who is pro-choice.
