The Football Association of Ireland have confirmed that Blackburn will be "adequately compensated" for the payment of Damien Duff's wages after the winger was injured on international duty.

Duff, 24, limped out of the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2004 qualifier against Moscow on Saturday after just 20 minutes.

The exciting winger is expected to be out of action for three weeks with a thigh problem which could mean a near-Stg£100,000 pay-out by the FAI through their players' insurance scheme.

Duff has recently signed a new contract believed to be worth around £32,000 a week and an FAI spokesman said: "His club will be adequately compensated through our insurance.

"It seems that Graeme Souness is very upset and is calling for a review of procedure of payments to clubs when they are injured while with their countries. But the FAI believes it does everything possible to help the clubs in these cases."

The spokesman added: "It is fair to say that the players' insurance scheme premium is one of the association's major expenditures."
