KIGALI - Rwanda has sent its deputy justice minister on an urgent mission to Ethiopia to extradite a leading suspect of involvement in the genocide of a million people in 1984.

Government officials said yesterday that Mr Gerard Gahima flew to Addis Ababa for talks to extradite Mr Frodwald Karamira, former second vice president of the Hutu Democratic Republican Movement.

Mr Karamira was arrested last week in Addis Ababa when he slipped out to the transit lounge during a stopover after being deported from India on a Kigali bound plane.

Rwandan officials said Ethiopia may reject the extradition demand if a UN genocide tribunal wants Mr Karamira to face justice in its seat in Arusha in Tanzania.

Mr Gahima said before his departure: "We're the ones spending our money and time to get these people, but every time we get them arrested the tribunal appears on the scene to take them. This is unacceptable."
