Credit information firm Experian is to cut up to 300 jobs in Ireland and the UK before the end of March, the company confirmed today.

Experian, which employs 60 people in Dublin and close to 4,000 in the UK, said that the redundancies were being undertaken as part of a cost-efficiency programme.

Workers have been told they will be offered professional outplacement services, and retraining as well as the chance to redeploy to other parts of the firm.

Experian announced last month it was extending a global cost efficiency programme with the aim of saving tens of millions of pounds.

"As we implemented the programme, we have identified future efficiency opportunities and in view of the market environment, it is prudent to act on these. This is balanced by continued investment and recruitment in high growth areas of our business globally," the firm said in a statement.

"While we regret all job losses, the measures we are taking will help ensure the long-term health of the business and the actions included in the cost efficiency programme have prevented the impact on jobs from being greater," it added.

A 90-day consultation period with people affected by the announcement will start in January.
