Sports date: UCC invites applications for sports scholarships for 1998/1999 from students who intend to register in the academic year 1998/1999 and who have reached a high level of performance in their chosen sports - or have the potential to do so. Application forms are available from the Physical Education Office, UCC - phone (021) 902122/902230. Closing date for application is Friday, May 8th.

CAO date: Late CAO applications will be accepted up to 5.15pm on Friday, May 1st. They must be accompanied by fees - £36 for EU applicants, £54 for non-EU applicants. The CAO is at Tower House, Eglinton Street, Galway - phone (091) 563318, fax (091) 562344. Restricted-application courses may not be included in a late application.

Chinese course: A new course in TCD - business studies and Chinese - is NOW available through the CAO, although not listed in the handbook. Applications will be accepted up to Friday, May 1st, with at £36 late fee. People who have applied already can use the change-of-mind facility to list it up to Wednesday, July 1st. The course code is TR 088/BSCH. There will be an open evening on Wednesday, May 6th, at the Davis Theatre, Arts Building, TCD. Students should contact the admissions office or Patrick McCabe, co-ordinator of business and language degrees at the School of Business Studies, TCD - phone (01) 677 2941.

Limerick event: Leaving Cert students will be interested in the major recruitment fair being held as part of Expo Limerick '98 in association with The Irish Times this Friday and Saturday at the University of Limerick. An estimated 2,000 job vacancies from about 25 different industries in the midwest region will be on offer. Many of the companies, such as Analog Devices, Dell, Esat Digifone and Shannon Aerospace, will be seeking potential employees at the fair. Debate: The all-Ireland 1998 final in the debating competition for senior cycle second-level students, organised by the German Teachers' Association of Ireland, takes place on Thursday, May 7th, at 6pm. St John's Secondary School, Tralee, Co Kerry, will compete against Colaiste Eoin - Iosagain, Stillorgan, Co Dublin. Participants from earlier rounds, as well as supporters of the finalists, will be welcome at the final in the Goethe Institute, 37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2.
