MAEVE BINCHY'S End of Term, a feast of eavesdropping on the goings on in an everyday school staffroom, opens at the Bank of Ireland's Arts Centre in Foster Place, Dublin, tonight for a six-night run. It's a "must" for teachers and provides an amusing vignette of staffroom life for parents and pupils.
Presented by the Smashing Times theatre company, End of Term tells a lot more about school life than how pupils have done in their recent tests. Written by a very proud ex-teacher, Irish Times columnist and novelist, it deals with the intrigues that we hear rumoured abound in every staffroom.
No points are scored for kindness and no secrets are respected.
After its Dublin run, End of Term visits the Backstage Theatre, Longford (January 23rd to 25th inclusive); Hawkswell Theatre, Sligo (January 30th to February 1st); Ballyshannon, Co Donegal (February 3rd); Lurgan Town Hall, Co Armagh (February 4th); Bardic Theatre, Dungannon, Co Tyrone (February 5th); Rialto Theatre, Derry (February 6th); Riverside Theatre, Coleraine, Co Derry (February 7th and 8th); Siamsa Tire, Tralee, Co Kerry (March 7th to 9th); Municipal Theatre, Galway (March 11th to 15th) and Garage Theatre Monaghan (March 24th to 26th). It will also visit Kilkenny and Belfast on dates yet to be decided.
The Smashing Times company presents professional productions and community arts programmes north and south of the border; its patrons include Binchy, Brian Friel, historian and journalist Tim Pat Coogan and historian Robert Kee.
