The Henderson medal for the best performance in Junior Cert classics each year was presented to Claire Cassidy, a student at the Holy Child School, Killiney, Co Dublin, earlier this month. Claire is pictured here with her classics teacher, Margaret More-O'Ferrall. The president of the Classical Association of Ireland (CAI), Nuala O'Faolain, also of The Irish Times, presented her with the medal at a ceremony in UCD.

The CAI has over 400 members with branches in Cork, Dublin, Galway, Kilkenny and Limerick, each with its own programme of events. It organises seminars, an annual summer school and biennial tours of classical lands, such as Tunisia and Syria.

Its publications include an annual journal, Classics Ireland, and the Junior Cert Latin anthology, Carpe Viam. For information, contact Professor Andrew Smith, membership secretary, at the Department of Classics, UCD - fax (01) 706 1176.
