ELECTORAL REGISTER:THOSE ELIGIBLE to vote in the presidential election on Thursday, October 27th, who are not registered to do so have until next Monday to get their names on the register of electors.

However, those who wish to be included on the postal voters’ list need to submit their completed applications to their local city or county council by close of business today.

If a person is eligible to vote by post, or is unable to vote in person due to a physical illness or physical disability and is resident in a hospital, nursing home or similar institution, they can apply to be placed on the postal voters’ list or special voters’ list.

Application forms are available from city or county councils and must be completed and received by the relevant council not later than close of business today.

Everyone else who is eligible to vote but is not registered to do so has until next Monday, October 10th, to apply to their local city or county council for entry in the supplement to the register.

Applications for inclusion in the supplement must be signed in the presence of and witnessed by a member of the Garda Síochána. If the person cannot attend their local Garda station it can be witnessed by an official of their city or county council provided they state the reason why they were unable to attend a Garda station.

If, because of a physical illness or physical disability, a person cannot attend either their local Garda station or their city or county council, their application form must be accompanied by a medical certificate.

Every Irish citizen who is 18 years of age and included in the register of electors for a constituency is entitled to vote.

Separately, the closing date and time for nominations for the Dublin West byelection is noon on Wednesday next. Candidates may withdraw their nominations up to noon on the following day.

The election takes place on the same day as the presidential vote.

People can check if they are already registered to vote online at checktheregister.ie or by inspecting the register at their local authority, post office, Garda station or public library.
