A crane operator escaped unhurt last night when his crane keeled over and crashed into Temple Lane in the Temple Bar area. Gardai cordoned off nearby streets.

The driver, who declined to give his name, said: "I was very lucky. I didn't get a scratch. I don't know how it happened. It just went quickly."

Mr Pat Whelan, owner of nearby Mexican Italiano, said: "I saw it keel over and I ran over to see if the man was all right. He was staggering out of the cockpit. He seemed all right. I rang the fire brigade."

The crane was working on the back of the Temple Bar pub, which is being renovated.
