A man has appeared in court in connection with sending “nasty and offensive” texts to his former landlady, including one where she was told to pick out a headstone for herself.

At Ennis District Court yesterday, Garda Insp Tom Kennedy of Ennis said Colm Quigley (39), Steele’s Terrace, Ennis, sent eight text messages to Carmel Corbett on October 17th last.

Mr Quigley is charged under the Postal and Telecommunications Act 1999.

Insp Kennedy said Ms Corbett had rented accommodation to Mr Quigley. “There was a dispute as to whether or not that was amicable or otherwise. Ms Corbett says that it was amicable, Mr Quigley has a different view.”

He said that throughout the afternoon in question, Mr Quigley sent the text messages to her, all of them “were quite nasty and offensive”.

Insp Kennedy said five of the eight texts would be considered to be of an offensive, threatening and abusive nature.

After hearing an outline of the evidence, Judge Patrick Durcan said he would accept jurisdiction in the case, which will now be heard in the District Court.

Solicitor for Mr Quigley Darragh Hassett said the case may not take up a hearing date.

Judge Durcan remanded Mr Quigley on bail to reappear before Ennis District Court on May 9th.
