A Donegal councillor has defended comments in which he described a troubled housing estate in his area as a "mini-Limerick".

Cllr Brendan Travers made his comments at a recent meeting of Ballyshannon Town Council in Co Donegal after a local school was vandalised.

The Fine Gael councillor said the Lawn Park estate, which has been plagued by anti-social behaviour, was in danger of becoming a "mini-Limerick".

In an interview broadcast on Limerick local radio station Live 95FM yesterday, Cllr Travers said his comments were understandable in the current climate.

"We have a serious problem here with anti-social behaviour in one estate and the comment was made that things were getting out of hand based on what the media has portrayed of Limerick . . . I think it's very understandable why people would use that comparison," said Cllr Travers.

However, Cllr Travers conceded that problems of anti-social behaviour in both Limerick and Ballyshannon were caused by a "small minority".
