Twins Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf have been moved from the intensive care unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and are now on a surgical ward.
The five-month-old boys, who were born conjoined, are recovering well following a 14-hour operation to separate them on April 7th, medical staff at the hospital said.
Parents Angie and Azzedine Benhaffaf, from east Cork, said in a statement: “We are happy to announce that Hassan and Hussein have left the intensive care unit and are doing well.
“The boys were reunited for the first time today and it was very emotional to see them back together, in each other’s arms. It feels just like a miracle and we cannot believe we got our happy ending.”
A spokeswoman for the hospital said the boys were able to breathe unaided and feed from a bottle.
“Twins Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf left the intensive care unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital at the weekend and are now on a surgical ward,” she said.
The brothers, from Carrigtwohill in east Cork, were born in December at University College London Hospital.
The twins are the subject of an ITV documentary, Separate Lives: The Cork Conjoined Twins Story, which will be screened on TV3 tomorrow night.
