Ciarán MacMathúna's funeral Mass tomorrow

THE FUNERAL of veteran broadcaster, Ciarán MacMathúna, will be at noon tomorrow in Dublin.

THE FUNERAL of veteran broadcaster, Ciarán MacMathúna, will be at noon tomorrow in Dublin.

The removal will take place this evening from his family home in Templeogue, to arrive at Terenure College Chapel at 6.30 pm.

A native of Co Limerick, the renowned collector and recorder of traditional Irish music, died on Friday.

Born in 1925, he was a recognised authority on Irish music and he lectured extensively on it. He joined RTÉ as a radio producer in 1955 and travelled the country recording material for Radio Éireann’s traditional music archive.

His Mo Cheol Thú programme, which he started in 1970, was one of the longest-running on radio, finishing in November 2005.

He is survived by his widow Dolly, sons Padraic, Ciarán and daughter Déirdre, and grandchildren Eoin, Colm, Conor and Liam.
